CHAPTER 14

While it did take a couple of phone calls, I did eventually find a doctor willing to make a house call to a couple of out-of-towners. Just like I’d predicted, the lip took a couple of stitches to fix up and Tommy wasn’t a happy camper when the medical professional shared his prognosis on the matter. He did try to negotiate his way out by suggesting a butterfly clip and some glue, but the snicker from the doctor confirmed his worst fears.

I left the room while Tommy got the help he needed and while sitting in the bedroom, a phone call came through from someone I’d been waiting for. Sam sounded tired but he assured me he was keeping himself safe.

“How are you finding Toronto,” I asked as I made myself comfortable on the bed. Leaning back into the pillows, I was surprised by just how tired I felt and knew that given the chance, I would probably fall asleep without too much effort.

“Toronto is good, although I’m struggling with those who speak French.”

“Oh, of course. I forget that it’s not all English up here,” I said.

“Even still, I have had a couple of decent breakthroughs.”

“What did you find out,” I asked, itching to share my own discoveries.

“I spoke with a couple of Elizabeth Grant’s neighbors and they all confirm seeing the priest. According to one of them, he doorknocked the area before returning to the young mother’s house. Another told me how he gave them an uneasy feeling the moment he showed up.”

“Casing the place?”

“It sounds like it, yes.” He hesitated and I waited for him to continue, but he didn’t.

“Sam? You OK?”

“I think there may have been another?”

“Another abduction?”

“Yes, although this one happened before Amy Cote.”

“An earlier one?” The revelation shocked me. No, it downright terrified me. Just how far back did the victims stretch? How long had this monster been stealing children and murdering their parents? And the biggest question of all that I knew I needed an answer for was why?

“Three months before Amy’s disappearance, a four-year-old boy disappeared from Mercury, Nevada.”

“How do you know that one’s related to our case?”

“Aside from the fact that the mother who’d been in the boy’s company was found shot dead in her car forty miles from their home? Witnesses described a priest riding in the car with the mother and child the morning of the murder. What’s more, local authorities actually arrested a priest fitting the description.”

“Wait, they caught him?”

“According to my contact, they didn’t just catch him…he’s currently awaiting trial in the local jail. A priest by the name of Martin Fox.”

Too many thoughts ran through my mind and I needed to slow them down in order to make sense of them all. I could hear Tommy and the doctor talking in the next room.

“But that means they have the wrong man, doesn’t it?”

“Only if our suspect is working alone,” Sam said and that made sense.

“So, what do we do?”

“One of us is going to have to go down to Nevada and try and talk to the cops.
